About the event
Event: Women's History Talk with Author Melanie Holmes
Date: Saturday, March 26, 2022
Time: 12:00pm
Description:
Join author and native Mantenoan, Melanie Holmes, as she discusses her fourth book and highlights women's roles/lives in and around the Kankakee County area -- and nationwide -- as revealed in an analysis of her grandmother's vintage postcard collection (1906-1930s). Elsie Costigan Lemenager was the only child of Mary LeVasseur Costigan, who was widowed young in 1912, and had to stand her ground in order to hold onto the family's farm. This postcard collection is set against a backdrop of a de-emphasis of schooling for girls, World War 1, and the Depression Era. One part Coffee Table Book (brimming with stunning images), one part Art, American & Women's History, and one part family history (including the Costigans, LeVasseurs, Lemenagers, LaFleurs, Dailys, O'Connors, Martins, Bertrands, among others), this book is meant to teach as it entertains.
Released April 2021, The Secret Life of Postcards: Tracing Art and History Through One Woman's Collection is available exclusively at the Kankakee County Museum's gift shop. A book signing will take place in conjunction with this event.
